One of Apple’s greatest features is to read ebooks whenever you want and wherever you want. There is no need anymore to carry heavy hardcover books with you. Instead you can access your private library of thousands of  iPad books anytime. However, one of the big disadvantages is, that it can become pretty costly if you read a lot and download your books from iTunes. If you buy your iPad Books there you have to pay up to $15 for a single book. This is why I compiled a list of the best free iPad book download sites. You can choose from thousands of ebooks which are aboslutely free.

Nevertheless it has to be pointed out that all of the sites below only give you access to books that are public domain.
A public domain work is a creative work that is not protected by copyright and which may be freely used by everyone.  The reasons that the work is not protected include:

(1) the term of copyright for the work has expired;
(2) the author failed to satisfy statutory formalities to perfect the copyright or (3) the work is a work of the U.S. Government.

So as you can see, public domain books are old books. You won’t find new releases on these sites. If you do not want to read classic books but instead would like to download new book releases and avoid high per book download fees, I highly recommend joining an Ipad ebook download membership sites. On these sites you will have to pay a onetime membership fee (which is around $50). After that you may download as many Ipad ebooks as you like. This does not only include newest book releases, but also comics and newspapers. My favorite Ipad books download site is Your Ipad Downloads.

All their ebooks can be freely downloaded: Choose between ePub, Kindle, HTML and simple text formats. It is growing all the time, and the most popular books are even available on a CD or DVD that you can receive for free if you don’t have adequate online access

The site is organized alphabetically. In FullBooks.com, there are all kinds of books which are free to download. You can always find thousands of full-text free books here.

EpuBooks
epubBooks provides a great selection of high quality EPUB eBooks for anyone to download and read, and all absolutely for free.But they don’t yet provide bestsellers here on epubBooks.

ManyBooks
ManyBooks.net is a great site to visit if you have an eReader and are looking for classic books to read. They have over 25,000 free books to choose from and offer these books in many different formats. Some of these formats include: epub, pdf, ipod notes, html, plain text, rtf and audiobook. This makes ManyBooks.net a convenient, variously compatible source of books, which allows you to find books for your Kindle, Sony Reader, iPod or almost any eReading device you might own. ManyBooks.net enables you to search for books by author, title and category. On the homepage they offer links to new titles, recommendations and recent additions. You can also browse through weekly and yearly popular titles.

E-Books Directory

At MemoWare you can find thousands of reference and literature documents in dozens of categories. Almost all are free to use.

Literate Machine

Christian Classics Ethereal Library
The mission of the CCEL is to build up the church by making classic Christian writings available and promoting their use.

Baen Free Library
Over 100 free Science Fiction/Fantasy books, mostly from baen books. Baen is the specialist science fiction imprint started by Jim Baen. Site has a free e-books archive of their authors’ in-print works.

Golden Age of Comics
A great  site for downloading free copyright free golden age comics thta are public domain. You will have to register.

Open Library
Millions of books indexed, many are downloadable (select the “Only show ebooks” option). It’s an initiative of the Internet Archive.

Planet eBook
Free classic literature that has fallen out of copyright.

Misc Collection
Useful eBooks. Check this site which has many useful pdf ebooks on various topics available for download

Pdf search engine
Free search PDF and doc files. Database of more than 4M files.

RetroRead
RetroRead is a FREE publishing service that allows you to automatically convert any of the hundreds of thousands of free public domain books available in epub format at books.google.com to the Kindle-compatible mobi file format.

I spend quite a while reviewing the free iPad book download sites above. There are several more out there. However, most of these sites only give you access to some free ipad books to draw your attention. Their main intention is to make you buy books from their site. This is why I haven’t included them in my listing.
If you want to download new book releases and books that are not in public domain, it is a good idea to join Your Ipad Downloads.  As stated above this is my favorite place to download new book releases and books that are not in public domain.
